Daily Driving A Welded Differential

Welding your differential is a cheap and popular way to ensure that your drift missile goes sideways with a punch of the throttle and full opposite lock. But away from the circuit, what is life really like daily driving a car with a welded diff?

  • Funny story, a kid at my work bought his first car for 7,000$, it was 350z with a welded diff. I told him it's not a good idea since he just got his license and the rear end would tend to kick out, but he knew better than me. Needless to say, 6 days later he drove his old Subaru to work, I was surprised so I asked why. The rear end of his 350z kicked out on him and he ran it into a curb. The passenger side of his car was toast and wheel were bent under the car terribly lmao. The insurance totaled it and didn't give him anything for the car. DONT WELD YOUR DIFF NEW DRIVERS.

  • You forgot "Don't get caught by the police" because welding a diff is against the law in the UK.

  • Didn't even mention the most important part. STAY ON THE THROTTLE AND KEEP IT LOADED IN PARKING LOTS. Don't let the axles rack back and forth by being in neutral while turning, be in gear and lightly on throttle so the tires slip instead of twisting your shit to pieces.

  • OOOOR.... Just install a electronic locking differential. Now you can lock and unlock at the flick of a switch.

  • I have been watching you guys for really long time and thanks to you I learn a lot about my car and cars in general. I was more of a supercar guy, completely uninterested in old BMWs or Mazdas but after watching you guys I understood that they were no less. You guys have helped me know a lot about my car and how to maintain it, considering the scenario in India were I live the people give zero shits about their vehicle. Anyways, always fun to watch your videos and good job guys. And one more thing, I have finally bought my dream car that's the aventador SV and I wanted to know how do I go around the city without hitting a bunch of speedbreakers ?

  • Some rough-terrain trucks had something called positraction where if you were stuck in the mud you could just pull a lever and lock the differential. Stick one of THOSE on a much lighter car and have the best of both worlds

  • So what you've done is give me yet another reason to take the racing line while daily driving. Done.

  • This is awesome information. I have a 68 Ford Fairlane with an 8" rear end that I have welded and it really wakes up the car. Of course I am building a proper 9" rear for the car to be used later. Cheers!

  • Last time I was in a carpark with my tyre chirping and my prop shaft clunking like the tinman smashing one out some woman looked at me in disgust for driving a "broken" car, I just laughed in her face 🤣

  • I welded the diff on my FWD MK2 VW Golf and I still can't do mad skids, i've even added loads of drift stickers for extra HP but still no luck.

  • I use to daily my jeep with a welded diff. I loved seeing people's reactions when I'm turning in a parking lot, especially when I'm aired down and it's a hot day. I recently broke a axle shaft on the street so I recommend inspecting your shafts each season.
